A proposta adopta uma abordagem diferente do "típico" centro de artes em único volume-objecto, uma vez que poderia acabar por “esmagar” ou “ridicularizar” toda a construção envolvente. Opta-se antes por absorver uma série de elementos locais para produzir um edifício assumidamente contemporâneo, que valorize e faça parte de todo o tecido urbano envolvente. Assim, este edifico nasce da reinterpretação da volumetria fragmentada da escala das casas vizinhas, das suas coberturas inclinadas, dos muros em tijolo perfurado, entre outros.
O centro de artes é constituído por seis volumes aparentemente independentes, conectados por um piso principal no embasamento e por um piso técnico em cave. Os volumes altos correspondem ao átrio, auditório, café-bar e três salas das galerias expositivas - organizadas numa sequência alternada de espaços baixos e encerrados e espaços de triplo pé direito com iluminação natural, proporcionando uma grande polivalência em termos expositivos.
No exterior, unifica-se toda a intervenção pelo material: o tijolo cerâmico à vista - que evoca, também, a memória industrial deste lugar, agora sob a forma de uma “fábrica de cultura”, um centro de artes.

Águeda Arts Centre. The proposal approach is different from a "typical" arts center in a single-volume object, since it could eventually "crush" or "ridicule" the whole building surrounding. We opt for absorbing local elements to produce a contemporary building, which values and makes part of its urban fabric. Thus, this building comes from the reinterpretation of the fragmented volumes of the nearby houses, their pitched roofs, pierced brick walls, among others.
The arts center consists of six volumes apparently independent, connected by a main floor in the base and a technician basement floor. The high volumes correspond to the lobby, auditorium, bar and three rooms of the exhibition galleries - arranged in a sequence of alternating low and closed spaces with spaces of triple height with natural lighting, providing versatility in terms of exhibition.
In the outside, the whole intervention is unified by one material: ceramic bricks - that evokes, too, the industrial memory of this place, now in the form of a "culture factory", an arts center.
